802.1x
the latest authentication standard for wireless networks used to identify customers before they access a wi-fi network. The 802.1x standard requires customers to login with a username and password to authenticate on a wireless network. myKP is currently developing 802.1x wireless authentication for service areas.

802.11
one of the numerous wireless standards. 802.11b, 802.11g, and 802.11n are examples of wireless local area network technology. 802.11 utilises a free spectrum which operates on the 2.4 GHz frequency (2.401 - 2.473). each channel (1-11) communicates on its own frequency within the spectrum
|
association
procedure of connecting an 802.11 wireless device to a particular wireless network name. when connecting to the myKP SSID (wireless network name) users are connecting with "myKP free access".
|
authentication
the verification process for identifying a user.
|
CPE (Consumer Premises Equipment)
refers to any equipment located on a premises.
|
coffee
the coffee plant is a shrub or small tree classified in the genus, coffea. "beans" from this plant are the source of a stimulating beverage called coffee.
|
DHCP (Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol)
a protocol for assigning dynamic private IP addresses to devices on a private network reducing the requirement for public address ranges that can be costly and vulnerable to security issues.
|
encryption
encryption manipulates vulnerable data such as passwords, credit card numbers and other valuable information into something indecipherable to a non-authorised user.
|
myKP hotspot
refers to the myKP hotspot location. each access point has two antennas, and communicates with a user's Wi-Fi enabled device. the myKP hotspot, uses mesh technology and routes the signal to the Internet.
|
myKP
originaly an acronym for my Kissing Point, myKP is now its own word and is recognised as a symbol of fast internet and friendly faces. (though king prawn has a certain ring to it ;)
|
RSSI (Received Signal Strength Indication)
a measurement of the received radio signal strength.
|
SSID
an SSID is a network identifier for wireless networks. the SSID is usually broadcasted from an access point and identifies which wireless networks are available. the SSID for the myKP Wi-Fi network is 'myKP free access'.

SSL
SSL or Secure Sockets Layer is a security protocol created by netscape that has become an international standard on the internet for exchanging sensitive information between a website and the computer communicating with it, referred to as the client. SSL technology is embedded in all popular browsers and engages automatically when the user connects to a web server that is SSL-enabled. it's easy to tell when a server is using SSL security because the address in the URL window of your browser will start with https. the "s" indicates a secure connection.
|
WEP (Wired Equivalent Privacy)
the first generation of wireless encryption protocol designed for wireless networks. subsequent analysis has shown that it provides only a minimal level of security. myKP does not use WEP!

what is myKP wi-fi?
myKP Wi-Fi is a network of public wireless hotspot locations providing wireless internet access for mobile technology users.
our Wi-Fi network is reliable secure and user-friendly. built using industry standard technology, myKP offers simple plug and play connectivity. there is no special software or advanced computer skills required. simply, all that is needed to access a myKP hotspot is a wi-fi compatible device and a user name and password. the user name and password can be aquired at the hotspot through our sign up page. its free and only takes about 1 minute.
Then, it's time to log on, sit back and surf the net. some of the myKP Wi-Fi features include:
security and firewall
email and internet access
up to 12mbps
VPN (IPSec/ PPTP/ L2TP) passthrough
IP plug and play
web based authentication by SSL security
zero configuration

wi-fi
A way to get Internet access, the term Wi Fi is a play upon the decades-old term HiFi that describes the type of output generated by quality musical hardware, Wi Fi stands for Wireless Fidelity and is used to define any of the wireless technology in the IEEE 802.11 specification - including (but not necessarily limited to) the wireless protocols 802.11a, 802.11b, and 802.11g. The Wi-Fi Alliance is the body responsible for promoting the term and its association with various wireless technology standards.
|
WPA (Wi-Fi Protected Access)
WPA is a second-generation wireless security and authentication protocol designed to overcome some of the limitations of WEP.
|
UFO
knitting term, stands for UnFinished Object. often used on knitting blogs.
|
VPN (Virtual Private Network)
is a private communications network, often used within a company that creates a secure connection tunnel for data traffic on a normally unsecure network.
